Arrived in St. John around 3:00 PM and easily found our campground, Rockwood Park. Interesting site. It's actually a large city park of about 2,200 acres designed by Calvert Vaux, one of the designers of NYC's Central Park. It has 10 lakes and 55 different hiking trails. The park is operated by the St. John Horticultural Society. The campground is close to the main entrance to the park and its key advantage is that it is only about a 10 minutes drive away from the ferry to Nova Scotia that we have to take at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning.
Here we are set up at our campsite.
After we finished setting up we went for a stroll down by the main lake, Lake Lilly. Here is a photo of one of the buildings in the park.
And here is Lake Lilly with main pavilion and restaurant across the lake from us.
In front of the pavilion is this monument to working men and women who have been killed or injured on the job.
And here are some examples of the local wild life.
We then went for a short hike on a couple of the trails in the park. All along the trails there were specimen trees planted with plaques describing them.
Tomorrow we need to be up early as we need to check in at least an hour before the ferry as we head to Nova Scotia.
